Phillip Eng Announces Nine-Day Green Line Closure for Critical Infrastructure Upgrades
Phillip Eng, the MBTA general manager and interim state transportation secretary, announced that a central portion of the Green Line will be shut down for nine days starting August 8. The closure will impact service across all four branches through downtown Boston, allowing maintenance crews to perform signal upgrades in the central tunnel and accessibility improvements on the C Branch. To accommodate riders during the suspension, the MBTA will provide free shuttle buses for the B, C, and D branches, while Route 39 will replace E Branch service. Transit officials stated that completing the work during the day allows for greater efficiency than night work, though it may result in longer commute times for passengers. Following the Green Line closure, the Orange Line will undergo an 11-day suspension from August 20 to August 30. This work includes track replacement and signal upgrades. The MBTA also announced fare waivers for several stations and commuter rail lines during these maintenance periods.
