Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has issued an ultimatum to Senator Mitch McConnell, demanding that the lawmaker provide proof of his capacity to serve or resign his seat. The demand comes after McConnell remained out of public view for over six weeks following a hospitalization on June 14. While McConnell's office has released two photos and several written statements, the governor criticized the senator for failing to provide a verbal update or a clear timetable for his return to the Senate. Beshear noted that McConnell has cast zero votes and engaged in no official activities during his absence. The governor urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to intervene and investigate McConnell's condition if the senator refuses to be more transparent. McConnell, who is retiring at the end of his current term, has stated he is undergoing physical therapy to recover from a fall. Despite the lack of a formal medical clearance to leave his rehab facility, McConnell remains a prominent figure in Kentucky politics, with Rep. Andy Barr already favored to succeed him in the upcoming special election.
