Pamela Gavin Warns Rare Disease Patients of Upcoming Medicaid Work Requirements
Pamela Gavin, CEO of the National Organization for Rare Disorders, warned that new Medicaid work requirements could impact patients with rare diseases. The administration announced guidance last month regarding the 'One Big, Beautiful Bill Act,' which requires recipients in 40 Medicaid expansion states to complete 80 hours of work, volunteering, or job training monthly starting in 2027. While the administration provided exemptions for pregnant women, the disabled, and those caring for children with disabilities, Gavin noted that many rare disease patients may fall through the cracks due to vague definitions of 'medically frail' across different states. She emphasized that patients with fluctuating conditions or those undergoing intensive treatment may struggle to meet the requirements without clear documentation. Gavin urged families to be proactive by organizing medical records and communicating with state agencies to ensure they do not lose access to essential healthcare, medications, and therapies.
