Vance Boelter sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years for the murder of Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman

Vance Boelter was sentenced Thursday to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to the murder of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. The 59-year-old defendant agreed to the plea in June to avoid the death penalty, a move that drew criticism from the victims' family members who felt the justice system chose a cost-effective path over the ultimate punishment. The sentencing followed a series of calculated attacks in June 2025, where Boelter, disguised as a police officer, stalked and shot several state legislators. In addition to killing the Hortmans, Boelter critically wounded state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. During the hearing, survivors described the "extraordinary violence" of the night, while Boelter expressed remorse for the loss and heartache he caused. While Boelter faces additional state charges, the federal sentence ensures he will spend the remainder of his life in prison without the possibility of release.
