Mike Johnson believes that members of Congress should not be romantically involved with any House staffers, regardless of whether the staffer works directly for them. During a news conference on Tuesday, Johnson stated that Congress should adhere to professional traditions similar to those found in corporate America to minimize potential harassment. The proposal aims to create a more professional environment on Capitol Hill. While it is already a rule that members cannot date their own staff, the new standard would cover all staff across the House. Teresa Leger Fernandez, Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, supported the move, noting that the power dynamics leading to abuse exist for all staffers. Republican Representative Kat Cammack noted that a bipartisan working group is currently finalizing a list of proposals to reform the culture of sexual misconduct. The group is currently focused on establishing clear accountability and ending retaliation for bad behavior on the Hill.
