Midwest Poultry Services L.P. is voluntarily recalling nearly 1.6 million cartons of eggs, totaling approximately 19 million eggs, due to potential salmonella enteritidis contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the recall alert after reports of a multistate outbreak involving seventeen states, including Michigan and Texas. So far, the outbreak has sickened 98 people, with 26 hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. The recalled eggs, which include both brown and white varieties, were produced at Texas farms and distributed by Midwest Poultry Services L.P. from its Indiana base. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators for eggs with sell-by dates between July 20, 2026, and August 17, 2026. Those who have already purchased the affected eggs should toss them out or return them to retailers. Health officials continue to investigate to be sure they account for all illnesses in the outbreak.
