Minnesota and Massachusetts Consider Cryptocurrency ATM Bans to Protect Residents from Widespread Scams
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed legislation to ban cryptocurrency ATMs, which are commonly found at gas stations and convenience stores. The ban aims to address significant financial losses caused by scammers who pressure victims, particularly seniors, into converting cash into digital currency. State officials reported that residents lost nearly $1 million in these scams since 2023, with many victims feeling embarrassed to report the losses. In Massachusetts, lawmakers are debating a similar statewide ban as part of an economic development bill. Prosecutors argue that the lack of regulatory oversight for these kiosks makes it difficult to recover funds once they are moved to private wallets or foreign exchanges. While some local law enforcement agencies have successfully recovered funds through search warrants, officials noted that these opportunities are rare. Both states are seeking to provide stronger consumer protections and stop the financial exploitation of residents, especially the elderly population, who are often targeted by persuasive scammers.
