International Organization for Migration and UNHCR report over 500 Rohingya people feared dead off Myanmar’s coast.
International Organization for Migration and UNHCR issued a joint statement confirming that more than 500 people are feared dead after two vessels reportedly capsized off the coast of Myanmar. The vessels, which departed from Myanmar’s Rakhine State in late June, were carrying mostly members of the Rohingya community. According to the statement, one boat lost contact shortly after departing, while the second was believed to have sunk near Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. The international bodies expressed grave concern over the potential loss of life, noting the dangerous conditions under which the crossings occurred. Officials stressed that these journeys took place outside the regular sailing season, heightening the risks. The reports highlight the devastating impact of ongoing conflict in Myanmar and the resulting illegal movements by vulnerable populations. The IOM and UNHCR called for stronger international efforts to prevent further deaths along this dangerous maritime route. They urged enhanced search and rescue operations and action against smuggling and trafficking networks that exploit people seeking safety.
