The International Organization for Migration and the UN Refugee Agency report that more than 500 people are feared dead after two boats capsized off Myanmar.
The International Organization for Migration and the UN Refugee Agency expressed grave concern over reports that two vessels carrying more than 500 people may have capsized off the coast of Myanmar. The boats, which departed from the war-torn Rakhine state in late June, were primarily carrying members of the Rohingya minority. One vessel with approximately 250 passengers lost contact shortly after departure, while a second boat carrying about 280 people is believed to have sunk off the Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. These perilous journeys occurred outside the regular sailing season, with heavy rainfall and flooding further increasing the risks for the passengers. The UN bodies noted that these tragedies highlight the lack of sustainable solutions for Rohingya communities facing protracted conflict. The agencies called for stronger international efforts to improve search and rescue operations and to address the smuggling and trafficking networks that exploit those seeking safety. While figures are not yet officially confirmed, the loss would add to nearly 300 people reported missing or dead in the region this year.
