Flash flooding and mudslides forced the closure of Interstate 70 between Silt and New Castle in Garfield County.
Interstate 70 remains closed in both directions between mile markers 97 and 105 due to flash flooding and mudslides. The Colorado Department of Transportation is currently working to clear debris that covered more than 300 yards of the roadway, with mud reaching depths of over three feet in some sections. Shilo Holbrook, LTC Operations of the Mary Gypsum area, noted that crews are utilizing various equipment, including track hoes and vac trucks, to clear clogged drainage culverts and wash the road surface. While Interstate 70 remains blocked with no immediate reopening time, Highway 6 has reopened between mile markers 100 and 103. However, officials warn that U.S. 6 and nearby frontage roads still experience standing water and mud, creating hazardous conditions for motorists. The Garfield County Sheriff's Office also reported that swift-moving water and fallen logs have completely flooded County Road 214 at its intersection with County Road 262. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid driving through flooded sections of the roadway.
