Governor Mikie Sherrill faces scrutiny over a software glitch that registered 6,600 non-citizens to New Jersey’s voter rolls.

Governor Mikie Sherrill revealed that a software error at the Motor Vehicle Commission mistakenly registered approximately 6,600 non-citizens to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. Although these individuals indicated they were not U.S. citizens, the system registered them anyway, resulting in 400 non-citizens casting ballots. Sherrill blamed the oversight on the previous administration of Phil Murphy, who claimed he had no prior knowledge of the glitch. While the software vendor, IDEMIA, argued that the state is responsible for verifying eligibility, Sherrill maintains the Motor Vehicle Commission has been disorganized. The Department of Justice has requested the names and addresses of the affected voters, noting that it is illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. Sherrill defended the state against the federal inquiry, suggesting the administration is attempting to weaponize the error. Meanwhile, 19 House Republicans demanded answers from Sherrill, calling the error a "catastrophic breakdown" of election safeguards. Sherrill has launched an independent investigation to determine the full scope of the failure.
