Elon Musk and SpaceX Begin Development of $16.8 Billion Terafab Chipmaking Facility in Grimes County
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, confirmed that the company is embarking on a massive chip-building effort with the construction of Terafab, a $16.8 billion semiconductor facility in Grimes County, Texas. The project will span 100 million square feet and is expected to create over 3,000 permanent jobs, ranging from engineering to food service. SpaceX representatives stated that the facility will produce chips for self-driving vehicles, humanoid robots, and space-based data centers. The administration announced a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant for the project, while local school districts and the county have finalized tax agreements. SpaceX committed to building its own natural gas-fired power plants to ensure the ratepayer costs do not increase for the local community. While some residents expressed concerns regarding the environmental impact and the disruption of rural life, SpaceX officials clarified that the facility will use closed-loop water systems and will not dry up the Navasota River. The project is positioned as a strategic move to rebuild the domestic semiconductor supply chain.
