xAI Sues Terry Wayne Harwood for Using the Grok AI Tool to Generate Child Sexual Abuse Material
xAI has filed a federal lawsuit against Terry Wayne Harwood for allegedly misusing the company’s Grok chatbot to create sexually explicit child abuse material. The lawsuit, filed in a Texas court, marks one of the first instances of an AI company suing a user for generating such content. The complaint alleges that Harwood violated the company’s terms of service by using "misleading prompts" to bypass built-in safeguards. By doing so, he converted non-sexual photographs of both adults and minors into non-consensual deepfakes. xAI stated that Harwood’s actions exposed the company to significant legal risk and reputational damage. The company is seeking unspecified monetary damages and a court order to permanently ban Harwood from using the platform. This legal action comes as xAI faces global scrutiny over the amount of explicit content users can generate. To date, the company has suspended over 52,000 accounts and made more than 73,000 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
