Major Rugby Issues Nationwide Recall of Subpotent Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets

Major Rugby, a pharmaceutical manufacturer, issued a nationwide recall of its levothyroxine sodium tablets, which are commonly used to treat hypothyroidism and enlarged thyroid glands. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall as Class II, indicating that while the medication is subpotent—delivering less of the active ingredient than intended—it is not likely to cause serious adverse health effects. Distributed nationwide beginning in January 2025, the recall affects twelve different dosages and packages, including 10-count blister packs and 100-tablet cartons. Consumers are advised to return the recalled products to the point of purchase and consult with their physicians regarding their specific treatment plans. Major Rugby noted that patients should not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting a healthcare provider, as sudden changes can sometimes cause ill effects.
