The move follows two rounds of parliamentary voting and a decision by lawmakers to forgo a public referendum, as the name Naoero is already widely used within the community and is constitutionally permitted. Nauru is the world's third-smallest country by population. The name change follows a period of economic history marked by a phosphate mining boom and subsequent collapse. The government is now seeking overseas investment to combat rising sea levels.
