President David Adeang Announces Official Name Change of Nauru to the Republic of Naoero
President David Adeang has announced that the Pacific Island nation of Nauru has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero. The change aligns the country's international name with its traditional spelling and pronunciation in the national language, moving away from the name Nauru, which was adopted for international convenience. Under the new designation, the country's international code will shift from NRU to NRO, and the people will be known as dei-Naoero instead of Nauruan. The government stated that the move honors the nation's heritage and identity. While a referendum was initially planned, lawmakers decided a public vote was not necessary as the name Naoero has long been used within the community. The change follows a similar trend of nations rebranding to reflect their historic identities, similar to Turkey's shift to Türkiye. The government is now seeking international recognition of the new name across various institutions.
