Utah has retained its top ranking as the best overall state in the country for the fourth consecutive year, according to the 2026 Overall Best State Rankings by U.S. News & World Report. The state secured its position by performing well across multiple categories, including ranking second in economy and fiscal stability and fourth in infrastructure. Eric Gertler, the U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO, noted that the rankings reflect a broader realignment of American economic growth, with states in the Midwest and South gaining ground as workers and businesses move toward more affordable regions. While Utah remained consistent across several categories, Texas claimed the nation's highest-ranked economy due to strong job growth and GDP growth. Other notable performers included South Dakota and North Dakota, which saw significant gains in the rankings. Conversely, several Northeastern states saw substantial declines as human and financial capital migrated toward lower-cost areas.
