Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Austin Abdelnabi was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday after responding to a call regarding a man acting erratically with a gun near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street. Abdelnabi, who joined the department in 2023 and previously served in the United States Marine Corps, was ambushed as he stepped out of his patrol vehicle. Fellow officers returned fire and killed the suspect, but Abdelnabi was struck during the exchange. Sheriff Kevin McMahill noted the heroism of the responding officers who performed CPR on Abdelnabi. The Nevada Police Foundation expressed their condolences, stating that Abdelnabi paid the ultimate price to ensure a safe community for Las Vegans. The department plans to host a candlelight vigil for Abdelnabi on Friday, August 7, at Police Memorial Park. Funeral details will be announced in the coming days, following the release of body-worn camera footage expected within 72 hours of the incident.
