Kathy Hochul offers New York students a reprieve after Howard University withdraws over 500 first-year students for missed payments
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that students from the state who were disenrolled from Howard University due to missed tuition payments can seek admission at the City University of New York and the State University of New York for the fall 2026 semester. The historically Black institution withdrew 502 first-time-in-college students who failed to meet enrollment and financial deadlines by July 10. To support affected students, the administration offered expedited late admissions reviews at several SUNY campuses, including Buffalo, Albany, and Stony Brook. Additionally, participating schools will provide an $800 credit to offset deposits paid to Howard University. While Howard University stated that students were responsible for resolving their balances, some students reported missing the notifications. Keana Johnson, a student who was admitted to Howard's nursing program, is currently exploring other options, including the University of the District of Columbia, as she seeks to secure a spot in a new institution.
