Gavin Newsom calls for 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump following his "unhinged" speech on election integrity
California Gov. Gavin Newsom suggested invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office following a prime-time speech regarding election vulnerabilities. Newsom described the address as the "ramblings of a mad king," accusing the president of attempting to rig the upcoming November midterms by sowing seeds of distrust. The administration announced the release of declassified documents to support Trump’s claims of Chinese meddling and "election fraud." However, many critics noted that the evidence provided by the administration did not fully support the president's assertions. While Trump claimed China stole 220 million voter files, intelligence reports indicated that while China was capable of interference, it did not necessarily change the technical results of the 2020 election. Democrats, including Rep. Yassamin Ansari and Senator Jon Ossoff, joined Newsom in questioning Trump’s cognitive state and his "authoritarian" approach to the electoral process. Conversely, some conservatives expressed concern that removing a duly elected president so soon after his speech might upend the country's democratic stability.
