Nirmal Purja leads 10-person expedition on Pakistan's Broad Peak as avalanche leaves four dead and six missing
An avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak has left four climbers dead and six others missing. The expedition, led by renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, was struck by a fast-moving avalanche on Thursday, leaving the 10-person international team in communication with authorities since the fall. Authorities have identified two of the four recovered bodies as Nadhira Al-Harthy from Oman and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. American climber Mallory Geis, from San Antonio, was also confirmed among the fatalities. Search and rescue operations, supported by the Pakistan army, have been scouring the Karakoram range to locate the remaining climbers. Nirmal Purja, who gained fame for summiting all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in record time, is currently among the missing. His GPS tracker continues to broadcast pings, showing slight movement, which has provided hope for his survival. The team included climbers from the United States, China, and Nepal, and rescue efforts are currently being mobilized to ensure the safety of the group.
