Bert Mizusawa Wins Republican Nomination for Virginia U.S. Senate Seat
Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa won the Republican nomination to challenge longtime Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Warner for Virginia's U.S. Senate seat. Mizusawa secured 50.71% of the vote, defeating U.S. Navy veteran David Williams and businesswoman Kim Farington. Building his campaign on a background in military and public service, Mizusawa emphasized national security, military readiness, and federal spending. He will face Warner, who is seeking a fourth six-year term in a state that has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 2002. The primary was held nearly two months later than usual due to a redistricting referendum that was ultimately struck down by the Supreme Court of Virginia. The primary results settled several high-profile House races, including the victory of former U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd District. Luria will face Republican incumbent Jan Kiggans in a rematch. Other notable results include Republican Douglas Ollivant winning the 7th District nomination and Democratic Don Beyer turning back four challengers in the 8th District.
