Nigel Farage faces 33 rivals in record-breaking Clacton by-election
Nigel Farage will lead Reform UK into the upcoming Clacton by-election on 13 August, facing a record 33 other candidates. The main Westminster parties, including Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats, have opted to boycott the contest, which Farage initiated as a protest against parliamentary scrutiny of his financial affairs. Survation for Mandate Research polls indicate that while Farage is expected to win 73 per cent of the vote, his primary rival is the satirical candidate Count Binface. Polls suggest Count Binface could capture 20 per cent of the vote, with actor Laurence Fox also expected to perform well. The by-election was triggered by questions regarding a £5m donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne and gifts from a convicted criminal. While critics have dismissed the move as a political tantrum, the large ballot paper will feature a variety of independent candidates and members of smaller parties, making it the longest ballot paper in British electoral history.
