Independent autopsy of Nolan Wells finds cause of death undetermined as investigation into Mississippi teenager's death continues
An independent autopsy commissioned by the family of Nolan Wells found the 18-year-old’s cause and manner of death to be “undetermined,” pending further investigation. The report was revealed by civil rights attorney Ben Crump during the NAACP National Convention in Chicago. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Roger Mitchell, noted a red discoloration on the back of Wells’ head but could not rule out foul play. Because the state’s initial autopsy had already dissected the organs, Mitchell was unable to directly observe Wells’ lungs or stomach. The report also highlighted that several body parts, including the throat, were missing during the independent review. Wells disappeared on July 4 while on a boat trip to Horn Island with a group of friends. His body was discovered two days later. While law enforcement initially suggested he drowned, the Wells family and Crump have launched an independent investigation to seek clarity. A $125,000 reward has been offered by Rev. Al Sharpton, Tyler Perry, and Terrell Owens for information leading to a conviction.
