Intercontinental Exchange to Acquire MarketAxess Holdings for $5.7 Billion
Intercontinental Exchange announced it will acquire MarketAxess Holdings for $5.7 billion to strengthen its fixed-income footprint. The exchange operator will purchase all outstanding shares of the trading platform for $167 each in cash, representing a 33% premium over the previous closing price. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval, and will be funded through newly issued bonds, a term loan, and commercial paper. MarketAxess Holdings Inc. reported revenue of $218.42 million for the quarter ended June 2026, slightly beating analyst estimates. While the stock jumped nearly 30% following the announcement, Intercontinental Exchange shares saw a marginal increase. Analysts suggest the acquisition positions the company to capitalize on the surge in fixed-income trading activity while shifting investor focus away from concerns regarding perpetual futures and elevated mortgage rates. The combined entity will offer a single platform for fixed-income traders, integrating pre-trade price analytics, electronic execution, and post-trade compliance tools.
