Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, warned that global energy security faces a serious threat if the United States and Iran do not improve oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz soon. Speaking at a Council on Foreign Relations event, Birol stated that the world should be concerned about the current situation, noting that oil security remains a critical issue. The warning follows a period of intensified conflict where the United States conducted six consecutive nights of strikes on Iranian coastal cities and infrastructure. Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones at regional allies, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. These escalations have jeopardized a recent memorandum of understanding signed in Pakistan to secure a ceasefire. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that Iran brought the destruction upon itself by violating the agreement to protect commercial vessels. While the situation remains tense, President Trump continues to maintain that a diplomatic path exists to end the war.
