Troy Jackson is poised to become the Democratic nominee for Maine’s US Senate seat after Graham Platner withdrew from the race due to sexual assault allegations. The shift occurred after several contenders, including Jordan Wood, Nirav Shah, and Dan Kleban, dropped out of the selection process, clearing a path for the former senate president. Jackson, a logger and longtime legislator, has consolidated support from major unions and national progressive groups. While he previously campaigned alongside Platner, he has successfully secured pledges from a majority of the 601 delegates who will vote in the special convention. The Democratic party aims to flip the seat currently held by Republican Susan Collins, which is a key target for the party to retake control of the Senate in the November midterms. Jackson stated that the campaign is now turning its full focus to defeating Collins. State Democrats have until July 27 to formally select the replacement for the general election ballot.
