Apple is seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent OpenAI from using its proprietary technology while the trade secrets case proceeds. The iPhone maker filed a motion requesting that the court stop OpenAI, former Apple employees Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan, and the startup io Products from accessing or disclosing Apple's intellectual property. Apple claims that the misconduct was a coordinated effort at an institutional level, alleging that OpenAI normalized the use of confidential information taken by former employees. In response, OpenAI defended its position, calling the lawsuit "careless, aggressive and oddly personal." The AI company argued that Apple made several factual errors, including confusing two similar surnames and emailing the wrong person. OpenAI also noted that Apple failed to properly manage system access for departing employees, which allowed former staff to retain access to files they did not intend to use. While Apple pushes for expedited discovery, OpenAI maintains that it does not want Apple's trade secrets and is focused on building innovative products.
