OpenAI and Statsig to pay $3.2 million to settle federal claims of discriminating against U.S. workers
OpenAI and its subsidiary Statsig will pay $3.2 million to settle claims by the justice department that the companies favored foreign workers with temporary visas over domestic job applicants. The justice department alleged that the companies made it difficult for U.S. workers to apply for positions by requiring paper applications and failing to post openings on external websites. The administration announced that the settlement includes $1.2 million in penalties and $2 million to compensate victims of the discrimination. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the settlement ensures that OpenAI redresses harm and improves recruitment practices to give U.S. workers a fair opportunity. While OpenAI denied wrongdoing, the company agreed to the settlement to move forward with its immigration support program. President Trump has previously sought to limit the hiring of foreign workers to prevent companies from abusing the visa system. The justice department noted that while fewer than 10 positions were at issue, the settlement reflects the harm caused to U.S. workers who were shut out of lucrative technology jobs.
