Oregon Wildfire Season Nears State Record for Total Acres Burned
Oregon is approaching a historic wildfire season as the state nears the all-time record for total acres burned. As of early August, 2,014,481 acres have burned in 2026, placing the state just behind the 2024 record of 2,081,661 acres. Jessica Neujahr, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Forestry, noted that extreme fire behavior is being driven by dry fuels, lightning, and wind events. While many large fires have been natural, human-caused starts have increased to 56% of all wildfires this year. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly in the Willamette Valley where a Red Flag Warning and air quality advisories are in effect. The Grasshopper Fire has emerged as a new high-priority blaze in the Badger Creek Wilderness. Meanwhile, fire crews are managing several other major complexes, including the Rowe Creek and Hay Creek complexes, which have seen significant home destruction. Experts warn that the right weather conditions can rapidly turn small starts into major emergencies, necessitating proactive evacuation planning.
