Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated on Tuesday that the US health department has the current cyclosporiasis outbreak under control. The microscopic parasite, which causes watery diarrhea and cramping, has affected thousands of people across the country. While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified nearly 7,000 domestic cases this season, the true number of infections is likely higher as the investigation continues. Health officials have identified shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms as the primary source of the multistate outbreak. The contaminated produce was notably served at various Taco Bell locations. While the parasite is notoriously difficult to track, the current outbreak is expected to be the largest foodborne illness event in US history once all cases are confirmed. At least 94 people have been hospitalized due to the parasite, though no deaths have been reported yet. The CDC recommends that consumers monitor their symptoms, as the illness can take up to two weeks to appear after consuming contaminated food.
