Maple Leaf Foods Inc. Recalls Over 12,000 Pounds of Smoked Bacon Due to Import Inspection Violation
Maple Leaf Foods Inc. is recalling approximately 12,036 pounds of not-ready-to-eat smoked bacon imported from Canada. The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the Class I recall on July 24 after discovering that the product did not undergo a required import reinspection before entering the United States. While there have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury, the FSIS categorized the recall as a Class I, indicating a reasonable probability that the product could cause serious health consequences. The affected products include Royale Natural Applewood Smoked All Natural Uncured Bacon and Top Valu Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon. These items were distributed to retailers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled bacon, which bears the Canadian establishment number "EST. 1" on the package. Customers should either discard the product or return it to the original place of purchase for a full refund. The recall follows the administration's announcement of 50% tariffs on many Canadian imports.
