President Trump Proposes 250-Foot Triumphal Arch to Dominate Washington, D.C. Landscape
The administration announced a new assessment of the proposed United States Triumphal Arch, a 250-foot monument intended to stand atop the Arlington Memorial Bridge. While the project aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, the National Park Service reports that the arch will irrevocably alter the views of 37 significant historic sites in the capital. Critics have described the design as a visual offense that may obstruct the ceremonial gateway between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. To facilitate the project, the administration is pushing to overhaul the construction review process for historical areas. Under the new rules, visual and atmospheric effects would be of no consequence, allowing the administration to approve projects without the input of public or historical experts. This move is intended to make it easier for the administration to redesign the capital in its own image. Despite some proposals for smaller arches or alternative locations, the project is expected to move forward as originally planned to serve as a monument to military victories.
