The administration announced a database update to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, moving four service members killed by Iranian forces into a new category labeled "Overseas Operations." This change separates the casualties from the initial Iran war count, which began on February 28. The four fallen soldiers—1st Lt Tyler James Feehan, Pvt Isabella Gonzales, Sgt Angel S. Rampersad, and Sgt Michael Emmanuel Swinton—were killed during renewed hostilities starting July 7. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials stated the shift was due to "temporary data disruptions" rather than an effort to hide the human toll. However, some lawmakers and veterans have criticized the move as a lack of transparency. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed concern that the administration is circumventing congressional authorization by resetting the War Powers clock. Meanwhile, the administration argued that the April ceasefire paused the conflict's initial period, allowing for a new tally to begin. The updated figures now show a total of 18 troops killed and 624 wounded since the start of the conflict.
