Julia Hoos warns PJM capacity auctions reveal systemic flaws threatening future energy costs for consumers.

Capacity pricing mechanisms in the PJM region are showing structural weaknesses, according to analysis of recent auctions. While rates may appear stable now, experts warn that costs could jump dramatically for industrial users. Julia Hoos of Aurora Energy warned that the current system fails to adequately bring online needed power capacity or stimulate demand response. The auction results point to extreme supply and demand tightness across multiple mid-Atlantic states. Furthermore, the data center boom has added significant, unforeseen demand. Peter Cavan of Unison Energy projected that monthly capacity charges for a standard industrial customer could increase substantially between 2024 and 2028. Clara Summers noted that the problem is exacerbated by transmission bottlenecks. Market observers are calling for deeper reforms to ensure reliable and affordable power supply moving forward.
