Police shoot a machete-wielding man outside a Los Alamitos hospital following a dramatic road rage pursuit.
A machete-wielding man was shot and remains in critical but stable condition after a dramatic confrontation outside UCI Health - Los Alamitos on Wednesday. The incident began around 10 a.m. in Long Beach, where the suspect reportedly caused a road rage incident that impacted a fire vehicle transporting a patient. Following a pursuit involving the Long Beach, Cypress, and Los Alamitos police departments, the suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot toward the hospital. Robert Acosta, a spokesperson for the Los Alamitos Police Department, stated that crisis negotiators first attempted to de-escalate the situation. When negotiations failed, officers deployed less-lethal rounds, which prompted the suspect to charge toward the officers. This forced police to open fire, wounding the man. The hospital was placed under a brief lockdown to ensure the safety of staff and patients, though care remained uninterrupted. The Orange County District Attorney's Office will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
