Mars Wrigley will move its U.S. headquarters from Newark to Chicago by the end of October, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the state. The move will eliminate 307 jobs at the company's Newark location, which has served as a corporate hub since the 1940s. While the corporate functions shift to Chicago, Mars Wrigley will maintain its manufacturing presence in Hackettstown, where it has produced M&M’s since 1958. The relocation follows a $100 million expansion of the Chicago headquarters. Michele Siekerka, President and CEO of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association, expressed concern over the departure, noting a disturbing trend of major employers leaving the state. She attributed this exodus to a lack of business-friendly policies and called for a reform agenda to provide more stability for investors. New Jersey has already lost more than 9,700 jobs through WARN notices this year as other major corporations, such as Samsung and ExxonMobil, also move operations to Texas.
