Timothy Fox, an analyst at ClearView Energy Partners LLC, highlighted concerns that the US electricity grid is reaching a tipping point due to seasonal weather extremes and a surge in demand from the artificial intelligence sector. Searing heat waves across the country have forced households to increase air conditioning use, while data centers require constant power, stressing decades-old transmission equipment. Regional transmission operators, particularly PJM Interconnection LLC, have issued multiple emergency alerts as demand reached an unprecedented 168 gigawatts on July 2. While some regions like Texas have successfully integrated large amounts of renewable energy to maintain stability, others face significant challenges. Experts suggest that maintaining reliability during this transition will require billions, if not trillions, of dollars in investment over the coming years to ensure the grid can handle both growing power needs and real-world weather conditions.
