United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that a rapidly intensifying El Nino event is set to dominate global weather patterns, potentially pushing the world into uncharted territory. The World Meteorological Organization announced that the phenomenon is expected to reach record intensity as it peaks in the latter half of the year, driving extreme heatwaves, droughts, and floods across the globe. Antonio Guterres emphasized that while El Nino is a natural cycle, its effects are being amplified by human-induced climate change, specifically the expansion of fossil fuels. He urged governments to halt new coal, oil, and gas projects to mitigate the crisis. The administration of the World Meteorological Organization noted that central Pacific sea-surface temperatures are projected to soar more than 2.9 degrees Celsius above normal.
