Christina Paxson will step down as president of Brown University at the end of the 2026-2027 academic year. The university's 19th president, who has led the institution since 2012, announced the decision to allow for a new leadership transition to begin a new strategic planning process. Chancellor Brian T. Moynihan confirmed that while the Corporation of Brown University had previously approved an extension of Paxson's term until 2028, she chose to conclude her tenure earlier to ensure the next leader can establish a fresh vision for the university. During her presidency, Paxson successfully navigated a federal funding freeze and reached a settlement with the administration regarding athletic facilities and sex-based definitions. She also championed intellectual rigor, religious diversity, and expanded research grants. The Corporation of Brown University will launch a national search for the 20th president. Paxson will remain in her role to establish priorities for the final year of her tenure.
