Madison Police Officer Shot and Killed Corey Ruiz During a Brief Struggle Following a Bicycle Chase

Madison Police Chief John Patterson reported that 38-year-old Corey Ruiz was shot and killed by an officer on Wednesday after a struggle at the intersection of Baldwin St. and Williamson St. The incident began when officers responded to a call regarding a person checking parked vehicles, leading to a chase where Ruiz fled on a bicycle. Verified video footage shows Ruiz falling from his bike and being rushed by three officers. During the ensuing 28-second confrontation, Ruiz allegedly pulled out a knife, injuring one officer. While one officer shouted "Taser, Taser, Taser," the officers continued to attempt to restrain Ruiz on the ground. Seven seconds after the knife was identified, an officer fired three shots at close range, killing Ruiz. The four officers involved are currently on administrative leave while a state investigation probes the use of force. Experts noted that investigators will examine why officers chose to forcibly restrain Ruiz immediately rather than ordering him to stop from a position of cover.
