Shiloh Hendrix was found guilty of one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct on Thursday after a jury trial regarding a viral incident at a Rochester park. The 37-year-old woman was accused of using a racial slur toward an 8-year-old Somali boy with autism who had taken an applesauce pouch from her bag. The jury delivered a split verdict, finding Hendrix guilty of the interaction with the videographer but not guilty of the initial interaction with the child. Hendrix received a sentence of one year of supervised probation, 200 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine. Defense attorney Brian P. Karalus argued that the prosecution was overemphasizing a minor misdemeanor and criticized the "cancel culture" surrounding the case. While the Rochester branch of the NAACP raised $340,000 for the child's family, Hendrix raised over $800,000 for herself. The city of Rochester acknowledged the incident's impact on the community and noted that Hendrix admitted to her racist conduct while profiting significantly from the public attention.
