Social Media Misinformation Led to Massive Migration Surge Between Morocco and Spain
An estimated 60,000 people reached the Spanish territory of Ceuta in a few days, marking the largest migration surge between Morocco and Spain in years. The surge was largely driven by social media posts on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok that suggested the border was open, leading thousands of Moroccans to believe Europe was within reach. While many migrants successfully crossed, the rush caused mass chaos at the breakwater, resulting in the deaths of over 80 people due to drowning and stampedes. Many survivors returned to Morocco quickly due to a lack of shelter and food. Moroccan and Spanish authorities have blamed human smugglers for the surge, while some migrants claimed they traveled of their own free will. The Moroccan Interior Ministry attributed the other mass arrival to the exploitation of the digital sphere and the spread of misinformation. Officials are currently investigating the smuggling networks and the specific social media accounts that triggered the migration wave.
