Same-sex couple sues Ontario surrogate, the woman who carried their son, after she refused request to terminate pregnancy.

A lawsuit has been filed in Ontario Superior Court against an Ontario surrogate, the woman who carried the child, after she refused a same-sex couple's request to abort the fetus. The parents allege the surrogate failed to keep them properly informed about the baby's health and caused emotional distress, claims the surrogate denies. The dispute centers on concerns over a cleft lip and possible genetic issues revealed by ultrasound. Despite the parents' written request to terminate the pregnancy, the surrogate insisted on continuing the pregnancy. After the child was born, the couple initiated a civil suit, reportedly seeking around $600,000 in damages. Bioethicist Juliet Guichon of the University of Calgary noted that Canadian law grants the pregnant woman the final decision regarding abortion. Guichon also questioned the couple's motives, suggesting the incident raises serious questions about whether the child is in the best interests of the parents to be raised by them. The controversy highlights the vulnerability of surrogates, who are legally limited to reimbursement for expenses rather than receiving payment for their services.
