Ukraine’s sustained campaign to isolate the annexed peninsula of Crimea has pushed the region toward a humanitarian catastrophe. By targeting transport links and energy infrastructure, Ukrainian forces have disrupted fuel deliveries and caused widespread power outages. Satellite imagery reveals that Crimea’s nighttime illumination plummeted to one-fifth of its normal level by late June. The crisis intensified following a strike on the Balaklava thermal power plant, which previously provided up to a third of the peninsula's power. Residents face acute shortages of electricity, running water, and motor fuel, with some communities enduring rolling blackouts or remaining without power for weeks. While Russian-installed authorities have attempted to manage the crisis through subsidies and rationing, many residents expressed frustration with the transition from a "protected" region to a state of survival. Military analysts suggest that Ukraine’s use of low-cost drones has allowed it to strike nearly any target on the peninsula, providing significant leverage for future peace negotiations. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported intercepting hundreds of Ukrainian drones as the conflict continues to escalate.
