The National Taxpayers Union recommends that the House pass a "clean" continuing resolution immediately to avoid a potential government shutdown. The organization argues that passing the measure now, rather than waiting until September, will save taxpayers from the costs of a prolonged shutdown. The fiscal year 2026 has already seen federal agencies operate without regular appropriations for 161 days. While the Secure America Act provided three years of funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Congress must enact a new measure before the September 30 deadline. The proposed continuing resolution would maintain all 12 regular enacted FY 2026 appropriations laws through December 4 at current funding levels. The National Taxpayers Union noted that the House has only 19 legislative days remaining before the deadline due to the August recess and September holidays. While Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer claimed Democrats want to pass strong bipartisan bills, the National Taxpayers Union suggests the House should secure the votes now to keep the government running smoothly.
