Seven Save A Lot grocery stores are set to close this Saturday, July 25, following the termination of a licensing agreement with the financially troubled operator Yellow Banana. The closures will impact the South and West sides of Chicago, areas where residents often face limited access to affordable food. Save A Lot officials attributed the closures to "financial headwinds" and a significant 26 percent decline in SNAP and EBT transactions compared to last year. While the city provided over $13 million in taxpayer funding to renovate these locations, the stores struggled to remain viable under Yellow Banana's ownership. Residents expressed concern over the loss of convenient shopping options, particularly for those without cars or those on a budget. While some community members are exploring new ownership options, the city is currently seeking ways to recoup the taxpayer investment and find new operators to ensure the neighborhoods do not remain food deserts.
