Brazil Recalls Ambassador to Argentina After Javier Milei Insults Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
Brazil has recalled its ambassador to Argentina, Julio Bitelli, following derogatory remarks made by Argentinian President Javier Milei. During a political rally in Sao Paulo, Javier Milei referred to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as a "thief" and a "convict" without naming him explicitly. The comments were made while Javier Milei was attending a campaign launch for Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Brazil's Foreign Ministry stated that there is no precedent for a foreign president to insult the head of state and democratic institutions on national territory. In response to the insults, Brazil has also summoned Argentina's ambassador to discuss the matter. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that he would continue to lead without interference, noting that Brazil does not accept others sticking their noses into domestic affairs. Additionally, Argentine officials, including former President Alberto Fernandez and Governor Axel Kicillof, criticized Javier Milei, noting that the insults were disrespectful to a sister nation and a main trading partner.
