Hanoi is undergoing a massive urban transformation, spending $2.4 billion in the first half of 2026 to clear land for nearly 1,500 projects. The redevelopment aims to modernize the capital, featuring a $28 billion project along the Red River and a $35.2 billion Olympic sports area. These initiatives are designed to address flood controls, air pollution, and infrastructure needs to attract foreign investment. Nguyen Khac Giang, a visiting fellow at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, noted that while the construction boom offers significant economic opportunities, it carries risks such as diverting capital from high-tech industries and potentially raising property prices. He emphasized that the rapid pace of development and a lack of consultation with residents can lead to disruptions for those who depend on the city's historic street life. While the administration has set compensation and resettlement rules, some residents remain uncertain about their future homes as the city rebuilds its existing neighborhoods.
