Larry Rhoden wins historic South Dakota gubernatorial primary runoff against challenger Toby Doeden
South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden defeated businessman and Bitcoin evangelist Toby Doeden in a historic primary runoff to secure the Republican nomination for governor. Rhoden won the contest with 70.5% of the vote compared to Doeden's 29.5% as the Associated Press called the race. This marked the first time South Dakota voters were asked to settle a gubernatorial nomination through a primary runoff, as neither candidate reached the 35% threshold required by state law in the June primary. Doeden, a political newcomer, campaigned on a platform of eliminating property taxes and establishing a state Bitcoin reserve. Rhoden, who succeeded Kristi Noem after she joined the administration, countered by highlighting his practical legislative experience and the tax relief measures he already signed into law. While Doeden positioned himself as a fierce supporter of the America First agenda, Rhoden emphasized his ability to collaborate and work with others. The winner of the runoff will advance to the November general election to face Democratic nominee Dan Ahlers.
